Biography

Marianne Shifrin is active as an orchestral and chamber musician around the country. She is Principal Clarinet with the New Mexico Philharmonic and has been a member of the Arizona Opera Orchestra for the past thirteen seasons. She held a one-year position as Acting Bass/Utility Clarinet with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra, and was previously a member of the El Paso Symphony, as Second/E-flat Clarinet and as Acting Principal for a season. During the summers, Marianne performs with the Missouri Symphony and with the Artosphere Festival Orchestral in Arkansas. Other orchestras she has been a member with include the Greeley Philharmonic in Colorado, the Civic Orchestra of Chicago, and the Columbus Indiana Philharmonic. She is a frequent extra/substitute musician with many orchestras and has played with numerous groups including the Phoenix, Tucson, Midland-Odessa, Ft. Collins, and Santa Fe Symphonies, the Naples, Colorado Springs, and Boulder Philharmonic Orchestras, and Opera Southwest and Colorado Ballet. She has performed at the Music Academy of the West, and the Aspen, Sarasota, Chautauqua, and Bowdoin music festivals, and has played under such conductors as Bernard Haitink, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Leonard Slatkin, James Conlon, and David Robertson.
Marianne’s chamber music appearances include the Phoenix Winter Chamber Music Festival, Albuquerque’s Chatter Series, and the International Double Reed Society Conference. Marianne is a member of Astraios, a national network of chamber musicians, and is the clarinetist with the August Winds Woodwind Quintet.
Dedicated to music education, Marianne has taught privately at the elementary, middle school, high school, and college level in schools and programs around the country.
Marianne received her Bachelor of Music Degree and a Performer Diploma from Indiana University and her Master of Music degree from Yale University. Her principal teachers include Eli Eban, David Shifrin, and Bil Jackson.
